Barbara Evans

Barbara Evans has worked extensively as a film director, producer, writer, researcher, and editor. A graduate of the University of British Columbia and the National Film and Television School (UK) in film direction, she has worked in the UK for educational television, the BBC, ITV and on films sponsored by the British Film Institute. She was a founding member of the London Women’s Film Group and the British Newsreel Collective. In Canada, she has worked as editor for the National Film Board on such documentaries as Wonderland and Bitter Medicine, and on the feature films Latitude 55 and Walls.

Barbara’s own films have won a number of awards such as the Yorkton Golden Sheaf (Prairie Women and In Her Chosen Field) and the MediaWatch Television and Public Affairs Award (In Her Chosen Field) as well as awards at the American Film and Video Festival and the Columbus International Film and Television Festival. Her productions include Now That We Are Persons, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Persons Case, Jessie’s Albums, the story of a farm woman who documented her life through photographs in the early years of the 20th century, and A Heaven on Earth, a feature-length documentary on the CCF, the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation.

Evans has written and presented papers widely at many international conferences on women and documentary film.  She is currently completing a book, Invisible Griersonians, on early women documentary filmmakers as well as a documentary film, Bee Queens: Collaborating with the Hive, on women artists and the environment.  She is the co-chair of the Standing Committee on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for CILECT, the international association of film schools and has served as both Chair and Graduate Programme Director in the Department of Cinema and Media Arts.

Wendy Donnan

Wendy Donnan is an award-winning Producer in the film and TV industry, with over 25 years of experience. Wendy also worked in the broadcasting industry as a Television Executive and Programmer for 20+ years, at both TVOntario and was an integral part of the launch team for OUTtv (PrideVision TV).

Wendy has an HBA in English and French Language and Literature from Western University, and an MA in Cinema and Media Studies from York University. She is also in the final stages (ABD) of her PHD from York University in Communications and Culture, with a focus on Canadian cultural studies.  Wendy has produced and Executive produced many hours of programming, including the recent award-winning documentaries 24×36: A Film about Film Posters (2016), and The Names of the Flowers (2019).  Another documentary in the works is Welcome to My World, a film that chronicles the life story of Canadian singer/songwriter, Jeff Poolton, as well as the documentary film, Bee Queens: Collaborating with the Hive, on women artists and the environment.   Wendy is also co-founder, Executive Director, and Programmer for the Oakville Festivals of Film and Art, which runs the Oakville Film Festival, now in its 10th year.  Wendy currently is a Professor at Sheridan College, Oakville, as well as at York University, teaching courses in Production Management, Producing, Canadian Culture, The Business of Film and Television, Understanding Canadian Media Industries, and Media Theory and Criticism.  Wendy also developed and taught the Business of Film Course at Wilfrid Laurier University, and has developed educational websites such as www.spiesintheshadows.com.
