Bee Queens - Collaborating with the Hive is a story of social commitment, political action, scientific research, artistry and love, set against a backdrop of government and corporate inaction.

This unique feature-length documentary (90 minutes) has been a passion project of filmmakers Barbara Evans and Wendy Donnan for over six years. The film will follow a unique group of artists, beekeepers, scientists and environmentalists, exploring the universal fascination with the bee from a variety of different perspectives. It will also sound an alarm about the effects of human activity and climate change on global bee populations, while suggesting ways we can challenge current threats to the bee’s existence.

This beautiful film will introduce you to artists whose lives and magical work have been inspired by the bee – artists like Diane Borsato, Aganetha Dyck and Penelope Stewart.  You will also meet the Raging Grannies who sing to save the planet, and industrious local beekeepers like Carmenie Stemmler who tend their hives and make a living from the products of the bees’ labours.

You will celebrate the uniqueness of the bee and be mesmerized by the intricate choreography of the waggle dance.  You will hear from scientists at the forefront of bee research like Paul Kelly at the Bee Research Centre at the University of Guelph and Laurence Packer at York University who work tirelessly to record the thousands of bee species that exist,  and Sheila Colla, who advocates for stronger government intervention to fight climate crisis and protect bees worldwide.
